McMansions & McDonalds

January 16, 2019

Washington, DC

It’s almost surreal.

As Americans are suffering under the longest and worst shutdown in our history, our “leader” is serving up cheap fast food on gold platters while blocking all attempts to strike a deal that ends this nightmare. By now you’ve probably seen the picture, and if it isn’t a metaphor for everything wrong in this country, I don’t know what is.

As a student of history, I think the history books will be clear on this: this was Trump’s “Let them eat cake” moment–surrounded by gold while federal workers are instructed to report to work without pay, to barter services for rent payment, and to seek out babysitting gigs to try to pay the bills.

Gold-covered mansions for the wealthy and McDonalds for the rest of us.

Is THIS making America great again? Are we winning yet?

I’m a no excuses kind of guy. I started from nothing and have worked hard to create a decent life for my family, and I want very much to live in a world where that opportunity and success is open to all. As time goes on, though, I see too many places where the system is rigged in favor of corporate-interests and billionaires, and the American Dream is falling like sand through our finger tips.

I see our voting machines filled with secret proprietary software we can’t even properly audit. I see voter purging disenfranchising larger & larger numbers of voters every year. I see campaign finance laws stack the decks for a handful of candidates who will do the bidding of special interests. And that’s just on the election side of things!

We have SO MUCH work to do to restore the dream of our forefathers. I’ve been vocal about the problems in our elections because I believe our work starts here. How can we get people elected who will be serious about fixing our problems when we can’t even guarantee that our elections are secure or fair?

I’ve put a lot on the line to speak out on this stuff. I’ve faced assaults on my business, personal attacks, and even threats to my family while investing my own time and money, all with the singular hope of raising awareness and creating real change. #MajorChange

But it’s not about me. I won’t be deterred or scared away from telling the truth because this is too important.

If your household and family are impacted as mine have been by the shutdown, please know that I am with you in wanting to end it as quickly as possible for the safety and well-being of all those involved.
